Recycling in Academic and Administrative Buildings

Three-section recycling bins are located in most academic and administrative buildings for the collection of all types of paper, aluminum cans, and plastic containers.  Recyclable materials can be placed in these bins or directly into 95 gallon bins that are located on loading docks and in some offices.

Desk side recycling bins are FREE and available for office use.  Desk side bins are emptied as they fill by the cleaning staff in all buildings except for the College of Veterinary Medicine. Faculty and staff located at the Vet School must empty personal desk side bins into the larger 95 gallon containers.  To request a desk side bin please contact 4-5107 or email: recycle@utk.edu

Cardboard is picked up each evening from building loading docks or dumpster areas.  To recycle cardboard, remove all packing material and flatten boxes.  Place flattened boxes in the hallway at the end of the day, or directly on the loading dock.

Waste Reduction Tips

Remember to practice the 3R’s in your office….

Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle

Reduce…

Circulate memos, documents, periodicals and reports rather than distributing individual copies

Use the duplex function when making copies

Replace fax coversheets with “stick on” fax transmission stickers or use rubber stamps to place fax transmission information on the first page of documents

Survey current computer reports to identify any unnecessary reports that could be eliminated

 Used narrow-ruled notebooks

Design brochures and advertising flyers with a mailing panel instead of using envelopes

Review, edit, and finalize reports and letters on the computer screen before printing

Reuse…

Convert scrap paper into telephone answering pads or scratch pads

Print drafts on the blank side of used paper

Use an erasable memo or chalk board for messages

Reuse file folders and ring binders
