Move-In Guide

When moving on to campus, remember these three easy tips to reduce environmental impact!

1. Recycle cardboard boxes at your residence hall’s drop-off location.  Boxes must be flattened and all packing material should be thrown away.  Drop-off locations are posted in each residence hall.

2.  Recycle paperboard and other paper packing material.  “All Paper” recycling bins are located on every floor of your residence hall.

3. Don’t forget to turn off the lights when you leave the room.  Turning off lights conserves energy AND helps to keep your room cool!

Sutherland/Golf Range Apartments Recycling

Sutherland/Golf Range Apartments
Sutherland and Golf Range Apartments share an outdoor recycling drop-off location. Two green dumpsters collect plastic containers and aluminum cans, and two green dumpsters collect all paper. These recycling dumpsters are located behind Sutherland Apartments near the Greenway entrance.

The post office of both Sutherland and Golf Range Apartments have 95-gallon paper recycling bins for the recycling of junk mail and other types of paper. Each post office also has a bucket for collecting rechargeable and alkaline batteries, and a box for collecting printer cartridges and cell phones.

In Fall 2007, we added 95-gallon carts for both paper and aluminum/plastic recycling at six locations near the Sutherland Apartments. Click here for a map of bin locations.

In Spring 2008, we added similar 95-gallon carts at four locations near the Golf Range Apartments. Click here for a map of bin locations.

Waste Reduction Tips

Top 10 Ways to Reduce Environmental Impact

10.  RECYCLE!!
With the UT Recycles, UT Cares program you can recycle plastic containers, all types of paper, aluminum cans, rechargeable batteries, ink cartridges, and more!

9.    Lights out: Turn off the lights when you leave a room!
And flip the switch if you see lights left on in unoccupied classrooms, study areas, etc…

8.    Give it a rest: Switch off computers/monitors at night
Turning off your computer actually reduces heat stress and wear on your system while saving energy

7.    Use less stuff
Keep a reusable mug or water bottle with you. You’re beverage will hold its temperature longer and you’re less likely to spill

6.    Be water wise
Report leaky faucets to your front desk and make sure that you always turn faucets completely off

5.   Watch the time ( 11am-6pm )
Avoid using electricity during peak demand periods

4.    Don’t go alone: Carpool

Additional tips for reducing environmental impact

In the Residence Halls

● Use a chalk board or wipe board to leave messages for your roommate instead of using a sheet of paper

● Try taking shorter showers.  Even cutting one minute off your time in the shower can save several gallons of water.

Wash cloths in cold water

Keep your refrigerator set at 38-40 degrees Fahrenheit

While Shopping

● Do you really need a bag?  If you carry a backpack or messenger bag, use it!  When purchasing items on campus, ask yourself if items you purchase will fit in your backpack or messenger bag instead of taking a disposable bag.

● Avoid purchasing single serve items.  This will greatly reduce the amount of packaging you throw away.

At the Computer

● Turn off your computer!  Computers are now designed to handle over 40,000 on/off cycles.  This is more cycles than you’ll probably ever use in the 5-7 year life time of a computer.  Rebooting your computer doesn’t take more energy either- it actually takes less than the amount of energy used to run your computer for three minutes!

● Turn off that screen saver!  Because of new technology, screen savers do not actually save energy unless they turn off your screen or back light of your laptop.  Instead, turn your monitor off when your computer will not be in use.

● Turn off all peripherals (printers, scanners, etc) when not in use

● For environmental printing tips visit the library’s website at: http://www.lib.utk.edu/printalternatives/
