Trash to Treasure

On Monday, March 28th students in the RA training class hosted the Trash to Treasure Recycling Fashion Show. The program was a success with six models competing for a $50 Wal-Mart gift certificate.  Beginning with an information session about the UT Recycles program the actual fashion show was the highlight of the evening.

Contestant #1, Jennifer Wilson of Hess Hall, is sporting a Gucci inspired sailor dress with cuts in the side for ventilation.  She is carrying a matching handbag made from jeans she wore as a child.  Just because you outgrow them doesn't mean you can't reuse them!

Contestant #2, Auriel Echols of Morrill Hall, is wearing a Beyonce inspired black "evening gown" made from a trash bag, with a tastefully placed advertisement for her new movie, the "Pink Panther", on the front.  She also made her own tiara using feathers from a left over boa.

Contestant #3, Hollie Countiss of Hess Hall, has put together an outfit that is recyclable and a retro look at years gone by.  The classic, black and white look reminds you of the clean cut look of the 1960's, as well as modern designer lines like Ann Taylor.

Contestant #4, Jordan Leach of Hess Hall, is "All Vol" in this simple sports cover all made from a used clear poncho.  The power T on the front makes it an outfit he can wear to cheer on the Volunteers or the Lady Vols.

Contestant #5, Eric Seifert of North Carrick Hall, is modeling the latest in business wear for men.  This suit, made from a trash bag, comes with a tie made of newspaper and a sporty side pocket with...what's this?  Yes, there's a used printer cartridge in his pocket!  Don 't forget, you can recycle your used printer cartridges.

Contestant #6, Alana Hibbler of South Carrick Hall, is sporting the latest in punk rock fashion.  Her schoolgirl skirt, made from old newspapers, when matched with her top made from an old trash bag, presents a recipe for fashion "fabulousness"!  Notice her hand-crafted accessories, including a flower pin made from recycled newspapers and CD earrings.

Contestant #7, Lindsey Howd of Humes Hall, is the "star" of the show in this outfit adorned with stars cut out from a bag from Panera bread.  Her top is made from a white trash bag, while her skirt, adorned with plastic forks and spoons, used to be a Victoria 's Secret shopping bag.  Her stylish, 1940's-inspired hat is made from a paper plate.

And the winner is…
